Claiming an Education

This article written by Adrienne Rich is all about women, thier rights, and education. She talks about how although women are so much more involved and integrated in the work force, there are still a lack of women in higher level jobs. She then continues to talk about how all of the history that we learn in school is created by men and through man's opinion. During my anthropology class last semester, my professor was talking about a time when she went to high school in Mexico for a year and was sitting in her history class. In class they were talking about the history of the United States and the Carlisle Indian School. The teacher told her to explain what this was because she was American, yet this was the first time she was hearing of this terrible event in history. This was a time in history where Americans took Indian children out of thier homes and conformed them to be less indian-like and more american-like. My professor was never taught this in school in America because the history books here only tell the stories that white males want to tell about history itself, about whatever will look good to society.
